The next series of severely criticized Sony PlayStation consoles is here! The PlayStation 5 – or PS5 for short – is the ninth generation Sony console. It was officially released on November 12, 2020 and has some great shoes.

At first glance: What is a Sony PS5?

While there aren’t any real next-gen games out there right now, buying a PlayStation 5 console today will prepare you for the future. Console prices are also unlikely to drop for at least a few years. Unless you can wait that long, you probably won’t save a lot of money by waiting.

What the experts say about the PS5

In Android Authority’s PS5 review, our reviewer Sarah Chaney was overall positive about the new console. Mid-level and factory upgrades make it a worthy successor to the PS4. The ability to choose between enhanced graphics with real-time radio tracking and higher frame rates provides a more computer-like experience than previous consoles.

Sarah also pointed out how good a PS5 is for those new to the game console. By purchasing a subscription to PlayStation Now and PlayStation Plus, you will have a small collection of some of the best games of the PS4 era, plus a PS5 game per month.

Things are a little more complicated for current PS4 owners. Improved load times and (sometimes) updated graphics are good, but not really worth the upgrade. Aside from Astro’s Playroom, which is more of a demonic show than a game, there are only three exclusive titles available at launch. Two of them are also available on PS4.

But in June 2021, we saw two other top-tier exclusive titles hit the system at Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Returnal. And Sarah said Horizon Forbidden West is also booked for a release later this year. Things are looking up for 2022 as well, with Gran Turismo 7 and a new God of War game set to launch at that time.

Another thing to consider before purchasing is the physical size of the console. Sarah says you might have a hard time putting it in your entertainment center unless you have large vertical or horizontal spaces. Additionally, the all-white design may clash with black furniture. Hopefully, Sony will release a replacement fin soon to match the color scheme of previous PlayStation consoles.
