Overview

 

Elevating you to the 11,930 ft, The North East sandakphu trek is a wonderland for trekkers. You can witness 4 other tallest peaks in the world which are more than 8000 m high. Mt. Everest, kanchenjunga, Lhotse and makalu. The third largest peak is Kanchenjunga with its family peaks supporting each other and creating Kanchenjunga.

 

From the top of the sandakphu trek, the view is like we can see heaven on earth. Lhotse and Makalu, the 4th and 5th tallest peaks in the world, join the party covering the Himalayan range. And on your left is Mt Everest which will be seen beyond sandakphu. Towering effortlessly like a guardian angel.

 

About the trek

 

It is one of the fewest treks on earth from where you can have a panoramic pleasant view. The whole trail is in singalila national park, rich in biodiversity, where you can find species of plants, animals, and birds. There are 600 orchids around the sanalila national park.

 

It will take 5 to 6 days to complete the trek. In summer, March to May is the best time to trek and in winter October to January is the best. The temperature goes from -15° Celcius in winter nights to 22° on summer days.

 

About the Location

 

Located in a hundred’s km of area, Kanchenjunga and its family peaks are called the sleeping buddha.. You can see the cluster of Kanchenjunga from Darjeeling. You will be craving to see the rest of it. The sleeping buddha gets more visible each day of the trek and 3 hours before reaching the top, the sleeping buddha will hide and seek from you.

 

Nearby places

 

There are many other places you pass by during the trek which get less attention but they are unique in their own way as the sleeping buddha gets all the attention. The samanden and Aal villages are so beautiful and remind you of villages in Switzerland. You can see the Nepali culture in these villages. The constant in and out of India and Nepal border throughout the trek is an exhilarating experience.

 

Trekking in Nepal and camping in India are unique in their own way. The view from sandakphu is unobstructed. From the top, it’s not only mt Everest and other giant peaks you can see. You will be seeing all 4 days of trek points going back to the campsite can be visible. Witness the sunset above the clouds with a breathtaking view. Also, witness the singalila ridge which separated the Himalayan range from west Bengal.

 

HOW TO EXECUTE

 

You can reach Bagdogra airport via flight or NJP railway station. one day 1 you will be driven to Chitrey, the base camp for the trek which is 90 km from the new Jalpaiguri railway station. rest for the day, cause on day 2 you will be trekking to tumbling which is 9 km. You will see many force camps as you are trekking between the India and Nepal border.

 

You have to show your id to them. Reach tumbling and rest for the day. On day 3 trek to kalapokhri with a gradual ascent in dense forest and crisscrossing India Nepal border through the day. Reach the splendid campsite and have dinner. On the day 4 trek to sandakphu, the trek will be steep which will be difficult to climb.

 

Reach the top, passing through the ridge one by one, and finally reaching the highest point. Sandakphu ridge, elevating you at 11,900 ft. All the highest peaks of the world waving at you. Reaching the summit at sandakphu is like joining the league with the greatest mountains in the world.

It is located 36 km away from Kalimpong and is an offbeat destination. camping nearby river rishi is the most pleasant campsite. Lampokhari lake and kupup lake is also tourist spot near rishikhola.
