How Much Does a Stripe Merchant Account Cost?
Stripe is one of the most popular payment processors in the world. You can use Stripe to process your transactions and send payments, but you need a merchant account to do so. There are two types of merchant accounts: A single sign-on (SSO) solution that allows multiple customers to access your Stripe merchant account using one username and password, or a stand-alone merchant gateway that allows you to connect directly with merchants who use another processor or system for processing credit card transactions.
Stripe Merchant Account fees
You won’t have to pay a monthly fee for your Stripe account. Instead, there are only transaction-based fees associated with it and these vary depending on where you’re located and the type of card you accept.
- Transaction fees: These are charged by Stripe when customers make purchases through your application (or other applications using the same backend). Here’s how they break down:
- If a customer purchases with a debit or credit card issued by American Express or Visa (Visa Prepaid), then they’ll be charged 2.9% plus 30¢ per transaction; if they use one of these cards to pay in person at physical locations like stores or restaurants, then they’ll also be charged 2.9% plus 35¢ per transaction — so what this means is that if someone uses an American Express card online to buy something online from Amazon—for example—then he pays $4 total for both his credit card fee ($2 plus $0) plus his PCI compliance fee ($1) because those are separate charges from simply paying via PayPal!
Fees for card payments processed in Singapore
- Stripe charges a flat fee of 2.9% + 30 cents per transaction for Singapore-based card payments processed in Singapore.
- Stripe also charges a fee of 1.0% + 10 cents per transaction for international payments, which includes non-Singaporean cards and transfers that originate from outside the country.
Fees for card payments processed in all other countries
Stripe charges a fee for card payments processed in all other countries. This includes the United States, as well as many European countries and Australia.
The fee structure varies based on where you’re making your purchase from; if you’re making an international purchase from a European country (such as Germany), then Stripe will charge a higher transaction fee than it would if you were making the same one in Canada or Australia.
Additional fees
Stripe Connect:
- $25 per month for a single payment method. This fee covers the cost of your customers using Stripe Connect to make their payments, including the transaction fee and any other fees that we charge on behalf of our merchants (such as PCI compliance). If you’re not charging any fees through Stripe Connect, then you don’t need to pay this one! However, if you’re paying out refunds or credits via Stripe Connect, then it’s included in your monthly bill as part of our Hosted Account Fee.
Stripe Terminal:
- $1 per card swipe (up to 100k transactions per month) plus 20 cents per dollar spent at checkout ($2k spent = 50 cents) plus 1 cent per transaction outside of checkout ($10k spent = 1 cent). These costs are incurred every time someone swipes their card at one of our partner terminals around the world; these include Amex ATMs and POS terminals like those used by retailers like Target or Walmart who have partnered with us.*
Stripe Connect fees
Stripe Connect fees are the same as Stripe’s standard rates, so you can use this tool to connect your website to your Stripe account.
Stripe Connect is free for US and Canadian businesses only.
Stripe merchant accounts charge no monthly fee, only transaction-based fees.
Stripe merchant accounts charge no monthly fee, only transaction-based fees. These are the same fees you would normally pay when processing credit card payments with your bank or credit union:
- 7% + 30 cents (for domestic credit cards)
- 4% + 30 cents (for international credit cards)
- 1% + $0 (for debit cards)
Conclusion
Stripe’s no-fee model is great for both merchants and customers. While it may seem like Stripe is gouging you with extra fees, the reality is that every business needs a merchant account if they want to accept credit card payments. With so many options out there, it can be hard to know where your money will go in the long term. That’s why Stripe charges only transaction-based fees when using their service—which means they don’t charge any monthly maintenance or setup fees!
