What is an insurance policy?
An insurance policy is a commitment between two parties : an insurer and an insured. The insurer undertakes to cover the insured against specific risks in exchange for an insurance premium . The insurance policy is therefore another term for the paper version of an insurance contract , used more in everyday language.
The insurer and its insured must both sign the insurance policy and carefully keep a copy. Indeed, this official document contains all the conditions of the insurance taken out: guarantees, obligations, notice periods, contribution rates and other terms.
The insurance policy concerns everyone, because certain insurances are now compulsory: you yourself have civil liability, health insurance, home insurance if you rent a furnished property, insurance ten-year guarantee if you are building your house, car insurance if you have a car…
Many other insurance policies are springing up on the market , for example travel, death, school insurance, unpaid rent, legal protection…At the same time, professional insurance has emerged, such as that for the liberal professions, medicine, law or construction, among others. What is the insurance policy number?
Every insurance contract has a unique number: the insurance policy number. It is a code given to your contract. You may be required to present it to your children’s school, on vacation, during an accident report, to your lending bank, etc. In the event that you have several insurance policies with the same company because several homes or vehicles to be insured for example, it is also a quick way to identify them, for your insurer as for you.
Professional insurance, such as the ten-year guarantee, RC pro or even legal protection also has an insurance policy number.
How do I find my insurance policy number?
In general, you will be able to find your insurance policy number in these different places:
- on your initial contract : you will find it in several places;
- on your insurance certificate : you will receive the insurance certificate by mail, or you can download it online, most often in the customer area;
- on your notice of expiry , which you receive each year from your insurer, between 3 months and 2 weeks before the expiry date;
- on your green card , if it’s car insurance. The green card is the insurance certificate issued by your insurer, to be presented in the event of an inspection. It contains your insurance policy number, as well as information related to the vehicle concerned, the insurer and the insured, among others;
- on any document of correspondence with the company : when it sends you a reply by post to a request you may have made, or when it simply sends you information, the police number is systematically mentioned at the top of the letter.
If you haven’t found it in any of these documents, you can always contact your insurer for information. The insurance policy number and the contract number are the same thing. If you can’t find it, be sure to look at both terms. You can see on the insurance certificate below where the policy number is. It is very often specified at the beginning of the letter as here:
Where can I find the Civil Liability insurance policy number?
Civil liability covers the financial consequences of material and immaterial damage caused unintentionally to third parties. You are responsible for damage caused by you, but also that of your children, your house or apartment, your pets, your domestic employees… This is the 1st compulsory guarantee for everyone. It may be requested by your child’s school, for example.
Very often, you do not take out a civil liability insurance policy in its own right : it is included in many other compulsory insurance contracts : home, car, motorcycle or even school insurance.
The policy number that you will communicate is therefore that of the insurance in question. You can find it in your online space, on your notice of expiry, your initial contract, your certificate of insurance, on your green card (for car/motorcycle insurance), and on most other correspondence with your insurer.
If you do not have any of these insurances, the insurance law requiring it, you must take out private civil liability insurance.
Where can I find the travel insurance policy number?
If you take out travel insurance with a tour operator or insurance company , your policy number will be written on your letters, certificate (etc.), as with most other insurance policies. When the travel insurance is contracted at the time of the purchase of plane tickets, you will find your contract number in the confirmation e-mail received after the transaction, at the same time as your tickets (or shortly after).
