High-Intensity Supports And The NDIS
What Is High-Intensity Support?
There are two levels of support that are provided to NDIS participants: standard and high intensity. Higher intensity support refers to the needs that require support from a more qualified and experienced support worker. The levels of high-intensity support are categorised according to the skills and qualifications of the support workers, and they cost more than the standard support. The cost depends on the support the participants might need from the support workers according to their complex needs; the support is further divided into two types;
Frequent: When assistance is required at least once per shift to control the complex behaviours of the participants.
Continual: It is when the participants need continued care for medical conditions like seizures and respiratory support.
Ebenezer Mission provides disability accommodation in Sydney, you can access the daily assistance under the accommodation by NDIS, and their professional team of service providers will help you build an independent life for you and your loved ones.
What Supports Are Included In High-Intensity Support?
Higher intensity support provides a wide range of supports to the participants with complex needs; some of them are the following:
Tracheostomy Care
Tracheostomy care is when a participant is dependent on the ventilator. The skilled service providers are trained to look after them; their duties involve personal hygiene, monitoring skin conditions, controlling infections, and keeping the stoma area clean. They must follow procedures to clear the airways and monitor abnormal secretions; they maintain charts to keep a record of the condition of the participants and implement emergencies when it is needed.
Enteral Feeding And Management
Enteral feeding is when a participant is dependent on percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) feeding. They have more complex health conditions compared to other participants. For people relying on PEG feeding, a detailed care plan is created, and the service provider will follow it along with controlling infections and maintaining hygiene. They will need consent for enteral feeding to introduce food via tube as advised in the plan. They will also monitor the flow of feeding to keep a record.
Complex Wound Management
The professional workers in NDIS providers have comprehensive knowledge about skin conditions and risks; they can identify the common indications and provide the necessary response to the wound, which stops the worsening of the wound. They are aware of the seriousness of the situation and know when to get in touch with a healthcare professional.
Ventilation Care
When the ventilation is approved in an NDIS plan, the providers assign well-trained staff to the participants to look after their personal hygiene and control the infections. They perform the tasks as the plan suggests; they operate a ventilator, fit a breathing mask, and monitor if the equipment is working correctly. Maintenance of the equipment is also their responsibility.
Diabetic Management
The support workers assigned for diabetic management are required to go through a compulsory training process and are only given responsibility when they are deemed competent for the task. Quality care is provided to participants by confirming their need for injection. The safe injection procedures are followed by using pens and pumps. Support workers monitor the participants and implement emergencies when necessary.
Urinary Catheters Care
The staff responsible for this task is well-versed in the urinary system of males and females. Their knowledge about hydration, procedures, types of catheters, and the challenges in inserting a catheter in both males and females makes them competent for the job. High-intensity care contains quality catheter care by frequently disposing of and replacing the catheter bag. Service providers also maintain charts and monitor the skin conditions of the participants receiving urinary catheter care.
