Weifang Medical University

Weifang Medical College is a medical college in Weifang, Shandong Province, China.

It was founded in 1951 as Changweifang Medical College in Shandong Province. Later, Changping Medical College was founded and undergraduate courses were established.

In 1987, the university was restructured and became Weifang Medical University.

In 1986, the Ministry of Education of China approved the Master of Medical Sciences programme and in 2002, the Ministry of Education of China approved the Postgraduate Medical Sciences programme at Weifang Medical University.

China is a world leader in medicine today. Foreign students can study MBBS at a WHO-accredited university and then move to other countries in the world or return to their home country to work as a doctor.

An MBBS in Weifang Medical University. It is located in Weifang, an international gliding center in the heart of the Shandong Peninsula. Weifang Medical University covers an area of more than 1.2 million square metres, with a building area of 570 000 square meters.

Over the past decades, WFMU has developed a comprehensive and interdisciplinary model led by medicine, encompassing many disciplines including medicine, health, integrated sciences, law and literature. WFMU has the right to award undergraduate and postgraduate degrees and to host international students from abroad.

WFMU has the right to recruit doctoral students in collaboration with Shandong University, South China Medical University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Shandong Medical Technology Education Centre, and Grassroots Health Management Executive Training Centre.

Schools and institutions

WFMU has 15 schools and departments, including the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, School of Public Health and Management, School of Nursing, School of Dentistry, School of Clinical Medicine, School of Anaesthesiology, School of Radiology and Preventive Medicine.

Lecturers

There are currently 1000 faculty members. There are four supervisors for doctoral students and nearly 200 for postgraduate students.

Continuing education programmes

There are 24 postgraduate programmes for graduate students in physiology, immunology, pharmacology, anatomy, embryology, pathology and pathophysiology, pathogen biology, biochemistry and molecular biology, internal medicine, surgery, gynaecology and paediatrics. Ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, dentistry, neurology, oncology, integrative medicine, emergency medicine, imaging and nuclear medicine, nursing, anaesthesiology, epidemiology and health statistics, social medicine and health administration, and applied psychology. There are more than 740 students at the tertiary level.

The University offers 16 specializations at undergraduate level. Clinical medicine, dentistry, nursing, anaesthesiology, medical imaging, medical laboratory, preventive medicine, pharmacy, public health and management, industrial relations and social security, marketing, law, applied psychology, health statistics, biotechnology and English. Over 14,000 students are enrolled full-time in three- and five-year programmes.

Research centres

WFMU is always focused on education and continuous quality improvement. There is a medical research centre, a modern educational technology centre, a computer centre and an animal care centre. It has more than 10 000 pieces of research equipment, including confocal laser microscopes (Zeiss), flow cytometers (Beckman Coulter) and image processing equipment worth 110 million yuan.

A regional demonstration centre is available for experiments. The centre has six university-level laboratories for general training in morphology, functional sciences, chemical analysis, clinical skills, computers and human anatomy, and 16 specialised laboratories in genetic and tissue engineering, dentistry and nursing, and is equipped with an advanced PACS system for imaging, an interactive testing and training system with digital network, a BL-410 biological function testing system and other equipment.

The Medical Basic Testing Centre is a demonstration centre for testing and training at Shandong University. Anatomy, Medical Ethics, Pathology, Physiology, Histology and Embryology, Pharmacology and Medical Imaging are recognised as provincial specialties. Since 2004, XMSU has completed 90 teaching and research projects at the provincial level and above and has received 24 teaching, laboratory and research achievement awards.

WFMU offers a branch of “Taishan Scholars”, the seven main provincial disciplines and laboratories, including anatomy and histological embryology, surgery, medical radiology, ophthalmology, immunology, applied pharmacology, dentistry. There are 24 research institutes, including pathology, neurophysiology, stem cell differentiation and circulation, molecular cell biology, urological surgery, orthopaedics, paediatrics, anaesthesiology, community medicine, health management, epidemiology, health statistics and health economics.

Research achievements

WFMU has done a lot of research in recent years. More than 340 research projects have been approved by national authorities, including 16 major projects under the National Science Fund and National Laboratory Programmes, 40 projects under the Provincial Science Fund and the High School and Youth Research Fund, and 260 office-level projects. More than 220 scientific awards were given, including 50 awards for experts at the provincial level.

More than 870 scientific articles and 70 books are published annually. More than 30 outputs have been passed on for further training at the provincial level or above. WFMU has been awarded more than 10 national patents and achieved good socio-economic and social benefits. The university library has more than 2.1 million books and 3000 Chinese and foreign periodicals.

International exchange

The University has extensive reciprocal relations with many foreign universities, including Western State College in California, USA; Ukraine Haerkefu State Academy, Ukraine Haerkefu State Medical Academy, Ukraine Dnipropetrovsk State Medical Academy; RMIT and La Trobe University in Australia; College of Saskatchewan in Canada and University of Occupational and Environmental Health in Japan.

More than 160 foreign experts have been invited to visit or teach at WFMU, more than 170 professors have studied abroad, and many employees have been sent abroad to receive medical assistance. More than 60 distinguished professors from all over the world have been invited as visiting professors. WFMU recruits international students every year and currently has nearly 600 international students from Zambia, Ghana, India, Nepal, Nepal, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Pakistan.

It is one of the universities accredited to conduct the HSK exams.

Admission process

Applicants must be school leavers, aged 18-35, in good health and fluent in English.

Note: Students must achieve HSK level 4 before graduation.
